EYE TO EYE

A friend of fate and felicity, Katherine Finerty, invited me to an incredible exhibition by Nigerian artist Abe Obidina she had curated.

The huge collection of paintings he exhibited were created during the past year, and exclusively depict black models, using them to not just show a narrative of the ‘black experience’, which is of course still so relevant, but normalising them to simply be a collective human experience.

The recreation of classical biblical icons such as Adam and Eve alongside symbols of West African voodoo should feel subversive, but in the context provided, it feels inspiringly natural.

Magical work!

EYE to EYE is exhibiting at Copeland Gallery until tomorrow.
